Chemistry Olympiad 2025

Congratulations to the 43 students in Years 12 and 13 who competed in round 1 of the Chemistry Olympiad this year. Each year the Royal Society of Chemistry organises a Chemistry Olympiad aimed at the most able A level students across the UK. This consists of a challenging two hour paper with questions based on real world Chemistry problems. This year’s paper included questions on radioactive decay, epoxides, the iodination of ketones, carbon nanotubes and Raman spectroscopy.
Over 16,000 students from 1.502 schools sat the exam paper nationally with only the top 65% of participants achieving bronze, silver or gold award. Impressively, all Wilson’s students who entered secured at least a bronze award with a total of 12 bronze, 21 silver and 10 gold awards achieved. A special mention to Bella who achieved the highest score from Wilson’s (narrowly missing out on a spot for paper 2) and Isaac who achieved the second highest score from Wilson’s (despite being in Year 12 and only being at the beginning of his A level studies).
Completing the paper is an achievement in itself, with competitors having to apply their chemical knowledge in order to answer questions that are well beyond the confines of the A level syllabus.
All of the students did very well indeed and should be very proud of their achievements – well done!
