Classics department abuzz

Since the start of the Year, the Classics department has been abuzz with various activities.

Miss Cohen has been encouraging cross-key stage collaboration, with students in Years 8-11 joining her on a Tuesday lunchtime to share in their learning of vocabulary.

Mr Nash has been hosting various Ancient Greek clubs including a full class of keen Year 8 beginners and an A level reading group who are studying the Iliad (in both English and Greek.)

All the Year 7s have been getting to grips with life in Rome in 64CE, using the brand new course Suburani. Following teenager Sabina, her father and her aunt living in the poorest part of the city, falling roof tiles, thieves and the emptying of chamber pots create danger for the residents at every turn!

Meanwhile Year 8 pupils have been learning all about ancient superstition and Year 9 evaluating whether the Britons really were ‘barbarians’.

Classics Club continues to run every Friday lunchtime and we have already had some incredibly enthusiastic talks on varied topics Arya in 7C volunteered to give our first talk of the year on The Egyptians, Aaron in 8S delivered an incredibly entertaining assessment of Athenian statesman Themistocles and last week we studied the ancient evidence to have a debate on whether Nero really did start the Great Fire of Rome.
