Geo-Memphis Jewels in DT

Across the last term, our Year 8 students focused primarily on studying the Memphis Design Movement.

Nirvaan (Year 8) shares his thoughts below.

In the initial weeks, we explored design history and why the movement was considered controversial and became unpopular, but later became highly collectable.

This work inspired us to create our own pewter jewellery designs, practising both our hand drawing and CAD techniques.

We learnt how to pewter cast using the brazing hearth, where we melted the pewter and poured it into moulds, we had laser cut to achieve our desired designs.

Next, we carefully removed any excess material to enhance the appearance of our pieces using a variety of hand tools. Finally, we prepared, mixed and applied cold enamel to add vibrancy and colour, transforming them into dynamic pieces of costume jewellery.

I really enjoy Design and Technology where we can turn our thinking and problem solving into products!
