Nielsen and Tchaikovsky with the RPO

Year 11 GCSE musicians recently had the opportunity to hear the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra perform at Cadogan Hall, in a programme that included Tchaikovsky's very famous violin concerto, but also two lesser known Romantic works. Sibelius' unforgettable Nightride and Sunrise builds the tension towards an overwhelmingly climactic scene of a Nordic dawn, while Nielsen's Second Symphony depicts the Four Temperaments - sanguine (pleasure-seeking and sociable), choleric (angry or ambitious), melancholic (analytical and literal), and phlegmatic (relaxed and thoughtful) - using the full potential of the orchestra.
